Soaked prunes, taken first thing in the morning and last thing at night, will often remedy the problem of constipation. Young stinging nettles boiled in milk have also been found helpful. After removing the nettles, drink this milk every morning on rising. This simple remedy is equally effective in cases of migraine headaches accompanied by bilious vomiting. The simplest remedy for constipation is to drink a glass of hot water first thing in the morning. But if this does not do the trick, eat a few slices of fig paste which you can make yourself in the following way. Take 100g of figs, 100g of raisins, 20g of senna pods (preferably powdered) and 20-50g of ground linseed. Mix all the ingredients together, grind into a paste and shape this into rolls. Cut off slices as you need them. There is also a special soup for sluggish bowels which you eat in the morning with a little crispbread or wholegrain bread. To make it, cook together freshly ground whole wheat, a small chopped onion and a crushed clove of garlic. When it is ready, add some chopped parsley and a spoonful of olive oil. This simple breakfast has cured many of their constipation. For more stubborn cases, however, ground linseed or psylliom seed should be added. Alternatively, if you are bothered with intestinal sluggishness, have been overdosed with laxatives, if even natural plant laxatives no longer give relief, or if you simply want to normalise your bowel movement, the following recipe will be helpful:First make a herbal infusion. For sensitive people use cassia stick (Cassia fistula, also known as purging cassia) tea. For those less sensitive use senna leaf, senna pod or some other herbal tea to stimulate the bowel movement. Brew and strain the tea, then for each person add one small raw potato, diced with the skin. Mix in a teaspoon of bran and one of linseed. Simmer for fifteen minutes. Eat this herbal soup in the morning and also at night, if necessary. If it does not appeal to you, put it through a sieve and drink the liquid. You may eventually become used to eating it without it being strained. The effect of this soup on the bowels is astounding and it works when no other laxative does.Sometimes just a change in diet will provide the answer. Avoid anything that may have a constipating effect if your bowels are already sluggish. Sudden constipation, followed by diarrhoea, could indicate a tumour in the colon and medical attention should therefore be sought. It may be that the constipation has psychological causes or is due to a weak nervous state, exhaustion or some mental anxiety. If so, it is essential to restore the psychological balance to ensure sufficient sleep and relaxation. Plenty of exercise should be taken, particularly if the sufferer has a sedentary occupation.

Constipation could be caused by lack of dietary fibre. A daily diet consisting of refined white flour products such as white bread, breakfast cereals, white rolls, pasta, pizza and white rice, will create a densely formed stool, leading to constipation. Excessive quantities of meat, milk, fried foods, coffee, tea, alcohol, sugar and boiled vegetables will increase acidity in the bowel, often ending in constipation. People who are bedridden or who have sedentary lives, suffer more from constipation. Exercise is useful to regulate bowel movements. The abuse or long term use of laxatives will result in a lazy bowel and constipation. Liver disorders such as Hepatitis, Cirrhosis of the liver, sluggish liver, often results in constipation. Anxiety and worry can cause either constipation or diarrhoea. The nervous system can be the single most important factor in not being able to relax to pass a stool. Being “uptight” could be the main cause. Problems relating to the spine, such as lesions. After accidents or operations can interfere with the nerve supply to the colon to ensure proper movement and evacuation. Not going to the toilet to pass a stool when the urge is there. Not making time to sit quietly and pass a stool. This can cause build up and compaction of faecal matter, resulting in chronic constipation, often the case in small children. Scar tissue resulting from abdominal operations such as appendectomies and Caesars can cause narrowing of the colon with resulting constipation. Spastic Colon, a condition where excessive bloating and irregular bowel movements, together with much abdominal pain, results in constipation. Food allergies: Sometimes certain foods could cause constipation, notably dairy and wheat. Pregnancy. The position of the enlarging uterus, impinging on the pelvic space of the colon could cause constipation. Lack of stomach acid which is often associated with a sluggish thyroid could be the cause of constipation. Cancer or growths in the bowel obstructing the passage of bowel contents resulting in partially expelled stools. Complete absence of the urge or nerve impulse to pass a stool. Dehydration: This obviously leads to a dry stool which is difficult to pass. What to do: Constipation is more than a troublesome condition. It is an insidious drain on the health of millions of people. As bowel transit time is increased, the stool becomes hardened and dry, which makes it difficult to pass. The body slowly reabsorbs the fluid content in the faeces and along with it many soluble toxins. This auto-detoxification is the reason people suffering from constipation have coated tongues, foul breath, lack of energy, and difficulty in thinking. These poisons affect every area of the body. A grated apple to which a tablespoon of linseeds have been added, left to soak for one hour, is an excellent bowel cleanser. Regular use of laxatives will stop the colon from moving naturally, resulting in constipation. Enemas will have a similar effect as laxatives if abused or used long-term. However, for a severely compacted and constipated colon, it might be necessary to have a general colon enema cleanse with professional supervision. It is important to ensure by asking daily if your child has passed a stool. Regular bowel habits are inculcated from childhood. Lack of bowel discipline can result in lifelong constipation. Bowel transit time can be established by eating beetroot. Take note when the red beetroot passes through. Ideally bowel transit time should be 12-24 hours. Even a stool passed this frequently, but with effort, indicates constipation on an overloaded bowel. Get regular exercise to promote healthy muscle tone and good circulation in the pelvic area. Regularly consult a chiropractor or masseuse if back muscles are weak or in spasm due to spinal lesions. Most of the measures suggested to clear away constipation are important. However, diet and exercise make up the main cures for constipation.
